Phase Coexistence in Single-Lipid Membranes Induced by Buffering Agents

چکیده
Recent literature has shown that buffers affect the interaction between lipid bilayers through a mechanism that involves van der Waals forces, electrostatics, hydration forces and membrane bending rigidity. This letter shows an additional peculiar effect of buffers on the mixed chain 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) lipid bilayers, namely phase coexistence similar to what was reported by Rappolt et al. for alkali chlorides. The data presented suggest that one phase appears to dehydrate below the value in pure water, while the other phase swells as the concentration of buffer is increased. However, since the two phases must be in osmotic equilibrium with one another, this behavior challenges theoretical models of lipid interactions.

Effects of farnesol on the physical properties of DMPC membranes.
Farnesol interacts with membranes in a wide variety of biological contexts, yet our understanding of how it affects lipid bilayers is not yet complete. This study investigates how the 15-carbon isoprenoid, farnesol, influences the phase behaviour, lateral organization, and mechanical stability of dimyristol phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) model membranes. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of m...
متن کاملCholesterol-induced fluid membrane domains: a compendium of lipid-raft ternary phase diagrams.
The biophysical underpinning of the lipid-raft concept in cellular membranes is the liquid-ordered phase that is induced by moderately high concentrations of cholesterol. Although the crucial feature is the coexistence of phase-separated fluid domains, direct evidence for this in mixtures of cholesterol with a single lipid is extremely sparse. More extensive evidence comes from ternary mixtures...

Phase separation in lipid bilayers that include negatively charged lipids is examined experimentally. We observed phase-separated structures and determined the membrane miscibility temperatures in several binary and ternary lipid mixtures of unsaturated neutral lipid, dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC), saturated neutral lipid, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), unsaturated charged lipid, d...

Biological membranes are compartmentalized for functional diversity by a variety of specific protein-protein, protein-lipid, and lipid-lipid interactions. A subset of these are the preferential interactions between sterols, sphingolipids, and saturated aliphatic lipid tails responsible for liquid-liquid domain coexistence in eukaryotic membranes, which give rise to dynamic, nanoscopic assemblie...
متن کاملPreparation and characterization of polyethylene/ glass fiber composite membrane prepared via thermally induced phase separation method
Grinded glass fiber (GGF) embedded high density polyethylene (HDPE) membranes were prepared via thermally induced phase separation method. FESEM images showed that all the membranes had leafy structure, indicating a solid-liquid mechanism during phase separation. The results of EDX and TGA analyses confirmed that the fibers were dispersed in the HDPE matrix uniformly. Normalized water flux of t...
